HIV Prevention Project


Background
Community Based Action Program to reduce HIV/AIDS/STIs prevalence in Bushenyi District is an HIV PREVENTION Project funded by Uganda AIDS Commission through Civil Society Fund that is supported by donors such as; Irish Aid, DFID-UK, DANIDA & USAID. The project’s life-span is one year, running from January 2008 to December, the same year. ICOBI is the lead agency with seven other sub-partners. These are;
  1. Giramatsiko Post Test Club
  2. Ishaka Health Plan(IHP)
  3. Rutoto SDA Dispensary
  4. Kabwohe Clinical Research Centre (KCRC)
  5. Integrated Rural Youth Initiative (IRYODI)
  6. Integrated Community Post Test Club (ICOTEST)
  7. Mother Child Rescue Health Plan (MCRP)

Project Goal
The goal of the project is to contribute to the reduction of HIV prevalence in Bushenyi District.

Geographical Coverage
The project covers Bushenyi district in the following sub-counties; Kabwohe-Itendero, town council, Ishaka-Bushenyi town council, Ryeru, Kyamuhunga, Kyeizooba, Kyangyenyi, Kagango, Kigarama, Nyabubare, Burere and Rwengwe.

Target Population
Direct beneficiaries 100,000 people
Indirect beneficiaries’ 150,000 people

Project objectives
  • To strengthen the capacity of 7 sub partners to coordinate & manage the response to HIV/AIDS by December 2009
  • To promote safe sexual behavior and reduce STIs (other than HIV) among 70,000 vulnerable and risky populations by end of December 2009.
  • To promote greater male involvement in PMTCT activities and services among 15,000 couples in 8 sub counties by end of December 2009.

Key Project Activities
ICOBI
  • Hold consultative meetings with local authorities and other stakeholders to introduce the project activities.
  • Hold a design workshop with all HIV/AIDS implementers and service providers in the project area
  • Train project staff (both the lead agency and sub-partners) to deliver HIV/AIDS services
  • Hold review meetings with partners and other stakeholders.
  • Supervise, monitor, evaluate, and provide supportive capacity building for the project.
  • Procure project equipment and supplies.

Project sub-partners
  1. IRYODI
    • Trainings/orientation for peer educators in HIV prevention.
    • Organize seminars and drama shows HIV/STI prevention.
    • Organize sports activities through which HIV prevention messages will be given.
    • Hold film shows on STIs’ transmission, prevention and control.
    • Quarterly review meetings with project staff and key stakeholders
    • Procure project equipment and supplies.
  2. KCRC
    • Trainings/Orientation meeting for Triple S club leaders on HIV prevention strategies.
    • Stage HIV/AIDS seminars in post primary schools
    • Organize Review meetings
    • Procure project equipment and supplies such as generator, digital cameras and computers.
  3. Rutoto
    • Train 30 Community Volunteers as peer educators
    • Facilitate community volunteers to mobilize people for STI testing and prevention.
    • Procure bicycles and a motor bike.
    • Mobilize and sensitize PHAs about their health rights.
  4. GIRAMATSIKO, IHP, ICOTEST, MCRP
    • Community dialogue to select PMTCT champions
    • Train PMTCT champions as PMTCT peer educators.
    • Workshop with health workers on PMTCT on strategies to increase male involvement.
    • Workshops for couples in child bearing age on male involvement in PMTCT services in six sub counties (2 couples per village).
    • Organize sports competition for couples through which health talks on PMTCT will be given.
    • Conduct home-to-home visits to promote male involvement in PMTCT activities and service utilization.
    • Provide semi awards model male partners for their involvement in PMTCT (4 couples per parish per year.
Staffing
ICOBI as the lead partner employs five people to run the project. These include; Project coordinator, Assistant Programs Manager, Project Accountant, M&E Officer and Capacity Building Officer.
For sub partners, they have a Project coordinator, Accounts Assistant, and Data officer/M&E Officer. KCRC in addition has a Counselor and a Lab assistant
